Wed January 25th: The Full Awareness of Breathing Sutra

The Wednesday night class will be taught by Laurie, intermediate teacher at Luminous Ground. He will guide us through the 16 exercises of the Discourse on the Full Awareness of Breathing sutra.

The Discourse on the Full Awareness of Breathing is one of the most important sutras in the Plum Village tradition, and is taught at every Plum Village retreat. When Thich Nhat Hanh discovered this discourse, he said, “I felt I was the happiest person in the world.”

This Sutra, also known as the Anapanasati Sutra, is at the heart of my own mindfulness practice. I return to its practices again and again.

It lays the groundwork for meditation practice by walking us through various ways to meditate on our body, feelings, mind, and objects of mind (the Four Establishments of Mindfulness), as well as the Seven Factors of Awakening.

This week we’ll begin our study of the Sutra with a meditation and teaching that takes us through all 16 exercises. If you’d like a preview, you can read the sutra here.
