Deep Roots Silent Meditation Retreat

Join us for a 3 or 6-day meditation retreat at the beautiful Ecology Retreat Centre in Hockley Valley, about an hour north of Toronto. Our theme is Fundamentals of Buddhist Teachings, including the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Five Mindfulness Trainings. The retreat will be led by our principal teacher, Paul Baranowski. Applications are now open!

Theme: Fundamentals of Buddhist Teachings
To practice mindfulness meditation, it’s important to understand the framework of the endeavour. At this retreat, you’ll learn 3 key foundational teachings:
> Four Noble Truths
> Noble Eightfold Path
> Five Mindfulness Trainings
Four Noble Truths:
1. There is suffering
2. There is an origin or cause of suffering
3. There is a cessation of creating suffering
4. There is a path that can liberate us from suffering
Our natural state is peace and joy. When we stop creating suffering for ourselves, we move in the direction of well being and liberation. The path that can take us there is the Noble Eightfold Path, which is the heart of the Buddha’s teachings. He gave his first Dharma talk about the Noble Eightfold Path, continued to teach it for 45 years, and taught it in his last Dharma talk before he died.
Noble Eightfold Path:
1. Right View
2. Right Thinking
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
5. Right Livelihood
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness
8. Right Concentration
The term “Right” is not about moral judgment. It is about what takes us towards suffering versus what takes us away from suffering and towards well being and liberation. On this retreat, we will learn how to skillfully walk this path.
The Five Mindfulness Trainings are guidelines for an open-hearted response to life’s challenges and for caring for our world. They are also doors that open to peace, joy, and freedom. Based on the insight of interbeing — the dynamic and supportive interdependence of all things — the trainings express the realization that our suffering is not separate from the suffering of others, and that our happiness is not separate from the happiness of others. Who is teaching?
The retreat will be lead by Paul Baranowski. Paul is the founder and principal teacher of Luminous Ground, a meditation group located in the heart of Toronto. Paul has been studying and practicing Buddhism and meditation since 2004. He is an ordained member of the Order of Interbeing in the Zen tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, and author of Interdependent Liberation. Paul has also trained in the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition with the teacher, executive coach, and accomplished translator Ken McLeod. He is also greatly inspired by the writings of Ngakpa Chogyam and David Chapman.
Paul is the Vice President of Development and co-author of meditation content at Muse, a meditation training system that includes a brain-sensing EEG headband and mobile app. Muse is an innovative biofeedback wearable technology that teaches users how to meditate, gives real-time guidance during meditation sessions, and provides a motivational framework for positive habit-forming. Paul’s students benefit from his integrative teaching style which marries fundamental technique with action in daily life.
