Weekly Online Meditation Class
April 8 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Teacher: Dawn Kim
It has been a few weeks or months since things around us have changed due to the virus. Now I am working from home like many of you, which is new to me but I am slowly getting used to it.
In the last few weeks, a good amount of information that came into my attention has been difficult to deal with, like on-going news on the virus, a sick friend, and friends and family losing jobs. When I had contact with this information, fear in me got constantly stirred and it took me a while to even notice that I was feeling numb and overwhelmed.
So one evening, after hearing more difficult news from my partner, I sat down on my couch and I saw that the only option for me to live through this difficult time without going into reaction was cultivating joy.
Also a story that I once heard from a meditation teacher, Joanne Friday, came to my mind. When 9-11 happened, a group of nuns and monks from Plum Village was on a bus heading to the beach for their lazy days. Once they heard the news of 9-11 on the bus, they debated whether they should turn back to the monastery or continue their trip to the beach. At the end, they decided to go to the beach and enjoy their day because they knew that they will need to help a lot of people in pain in the coming days and they had to have joy in them to offer help to others.
Noticing and cultivating joy does not make negative emotion disappear but it gives us strength and capacity to be present in the experience of suffering. And we all need this more than ever right now.
This Wednesday, we will practice noticing and cultivating the joy of being alive in each moment. So, please join me in our Zoom channel to practice and support each other as a community. The session will consist of guided meditation, teaching and group sharing.
